US federal holidays create ten three-day weekends in 2027. Five come from Monday holidays, four from holidays observed on a Friday or Monday because the date falls on a weekend, and one from New Year’s Day itself.

The days off in 2027 match the holiday schedule published by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, which lists Friday, June 18, Monday, July 5 and Friday, December 24 as the observed days. OPM calls the January holiday by its legal name, Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.

The rule behind “observed”
Federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) fixes the eleven holidays. When one falls on a Saturday it is observed on the Friday before, and when one falls on a Sunday it is observed on the Monday after. That is why 2027 ends with a holiday that belongs to 2028.
Two Thursdays worth one day of leave
Veterans Day (November 11) and Thanksgiving (November 25) both fall on a Thursday in 2027. Neither makes a three-day weekend on its own. Taking Friday, November 12 gives four days off from November 11 to 14, and taking Friday, November 26 gives four days off from November 25 to 28.
